Western Zhou (1122 BC-771 BC)

The style of the jade carving for <a href="http://www.chinahighlights.com/map/ancient-china-map/western-zhou-dynasty-map.htm">Western Zhou</a> is noted for its single and double slant incised carving which is known as the forty-five degree big slant carving and the technique has been discontinued after the Han dynasty( was seen again in the Qing Dynasty ). The jade artifacts of the Western Zhou are in high demand for the serious collectors due to their fine workmanship and rareness for the unearthed and transcendental objects.
Western Zhou Dynasty, Wild Duck Shape Container with Dragon Motif, H.25cm, L. 30cm
Made from Hetian jade, this wild duck shape container with dragon motif was designed to implied that the Emperor had the responsibility to take care his own people. The design principle can be fully expressed by the resting mother duck and baby duck. .The one leg curly dragon decorated on the whole container and the special pattern of the ear of mother duck all carry the genre of Western Zhou dynasty. The crown shape of handle on each side of the lid implies that this is an artifact for the loyal palace for Western Zhou dynasty.

Carved with green tone top quality jade, this jade bi is seen two opposite position dragons on both sides. The carving style is unique to the Western Zhou big slant 45 degree incised lines. <strong><em>Jade Identification:</em></strong>
Made of jade with green tone, this artifact has a bosom body with ears upright. The design has the tenet of Liangzhu Culture. The mouth has a shape of ax and the both sides have shown the motifs of spiral with low relief and incise lines. Open spaces are filled with thunder motif with slanting lines. Archaic evidences of differential weathering, cleaving veins, diffusive marking and secondary additives are presented.

<strong><em>Jade Identification</em>: </strong>
 Pendant w/ Fish Motif, Western Zhou dynasty,L. 7.5cm (Compare similar item from Smithsonian Museum: Pendant: fish 1300-1050 B.C.E. Shang dynasty Nephrite H: 5.5 W: 5.5 cm China Purchase, F1979.28 ). Fish in Chinese pronunciation has the meaning of surplus.  Fish motif is the popular one among many motifs in Chinese jade design. Antiquity evidence is obvious from the <a href="http://www.exoticjades.com/wp-content/uploads/WesternzhouFishAdditiveCrystal2.jpg">additive crystal </a>seen. Carving style and design pattern are similar to the two fish pendants, as shown here, unearthed in 1972 and 1980 from Jin Gao Ruins Chang'an County, Xian City and now are collection of Artifacts Bureau, Xian City, China.

<strong><em>Identification</em>:</strong>
Carved with yellow tone top quality jade, this jade plaque has the shape of retangular with round corners. Each corner has a phoenix motif with Western Zhou carving style on each side. Between the phoenix, there are two holes with on long round hole, one round hole. The plaque may be used for decoration of hat or dress. <strong><em>Identification</em></strong>:
Carved with top quality jade, the tiger plaque designed with mother and son tigers. Graceful 45 degree big slant carving incised lines with Western Zhou genre are decorated to express the stripes of the tiger. Antiquity evidences include additive crystal, diffusive marking and calcification.

The big eye of the artifact is supposed to depict a young deer which has been frightened back. The artifact is seriously calcified and the rusting residuals from copper are attached.

The sitting man has the appearance of government official. The swatting position has shown the style of sitting in the Western Zhou Dynasty. The complete calcification has made the jade with chicken bone white.
